The Overlooked Home

ree

I must say that looking for the right house can be so frustrating. For example, during your search, you see a house that you can imagine living in and began decorating in your mind. You are overwhelmed with joy because you believe that the particular house you have your eye on is “the one”. However, the moment you get excited, the house is already in contract or pending, which immediately pops your bubble of excitement. You could probably agree that searching for the right home is one way to have your patience tested along with maybe embracing the many lessons that come with it, which I am here to share.

Throughout the process I have learned to thank Jesus when I began to get discouraged. I must say that I am noticing that saying “thank you Jesus” after these let downs brings me comfort, because He is in control. For He sees what I cannot see and I must trust Him even in this. A closed door I have always found to be His protection. When a door closes, may I challenge you to say thank you Jesus? It has helped me to put things into perspective.

Another lesson learned was not to look over the houses that may appear unworthy, less appealing from the outside, or maybe unfit for what I am particularly looking for, because there may be more to that house, then the eye can see. There was a house I felt led to check out even though it did not list the amount of bedrooms we needed. Reason being, I understood that some homes have rooms big enough or additional space, giving one the ability to add a room or two if possible. All it would take is a little TLC and boom you have your dream house, or maybe close to it. I found myself focused on the wrong thing, and so caught up on the exteriors appearance that some of the houses with potential were overlooked. This is not to say that, the exteriors appearance cannot be one of the requirements of the home you are looking for, but just to consider that, what’s inside could be far greater. Additionally, you can always remodel the outside at some point throughout your home ownership.

I share this experience to say that, what you see on the outside does not always give the whole picture. Looks can be deceiving. You could possibly be passing up something great. What’s on the inside could be exactly what you are looking for. Just like King David in his youth. No one seen what was on the heart of David and what God placed in Him. His family and those around him seen what they could see from the outside. He was a young short shephard’s boy who played the kinnor (harp/lyre). Not someone you would particularly want to take on the battlefield with you. I am so grateful that the Lord does not look at the outside but sees the heart. He sees what most of us can’t see. The Lord does not overlook, or pass up what many may see as incapable. God sees the potential for greatness in each of us. David was overlooked, but God seen that there was more to David. God is not concerned with what you can’t do in the natural. He knows what He can do through you. It takes a willing heart, humility, and a heart that knows that God is able to do beyond what one can see or fathom, flaws and all. Sometimes we can pass up great friendships, relationships, opportunities, etc., because we are so focused on the exterior rather than the interior. That person or opportunity you disregarded could be an answer to your prayer, just as David was the answer the Israelites needed to bring down Goliath.

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7 ESV
